When Age and Hormonal Issues Are No Match for Dr. Ton

Success Stories

Mrs. Panchita had been trying to conceive naturally for over four years, attempting nearly every traditional and nontraditional method available. Eventually she resorted to IVF, and despite attempt after attempt, she was still left empty handed, to the point that many clinics eventually refused to treat her, saying she could not have children.

Nearing the point of throwing in the towel, as a last resort, she decided to consult Dr. Ton at Beyond IVF. Dr. Ton recommended a thorough physical examination, which revealed that her age was impacting her hormonal levels. Despite multiple previous attempts to retrieve eggs, none had been successful, so Dr. Ton took this into consideration and devised a new treatment plan tailored specifically to her needs.

Due to the limited number of eggs Dr. Ton had to work with, in order to maximize the chances of creating a healthy embryo, Dr. Ton decided the best path to take was multiple egg retrievals. Both the patient and Dr. Ton had to work together with patience and careful planning to achieve the best possible results as the clock was ticking, but the final result she was waiting for had finally arrived: a healthy embryo that passed chromosomal testing with flying colors. For the patient, just getting to this stage with a healthy embryo was already a huge relief, as she had never gotten to this point in the past.

Thirteen days after the embryo transfer, she secretly took a pregnancy test at home and to her pleasant surprise, two lines! The day after, Dr. Ton scheduled her in for an hCG blood test to confirm the pregnancy, and the results confirmed that she was indeed, pregnant.

Assisted Reproductive Technologies Utilized

Body Mass Index calculator

Being overweight or underweight can reduce fertility, so it is important to keep your body weight within the normal healthy range.

Body Mass Index (BMI) is an indication of your body weight and can be calculated by dividing weight by height. You should aim for a BMI of between 20 and 25, as this will optimise your chances of conception.

Woman’s BMI below 19

Even in these modern times, nature knows best. If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

Being underweight

If a woman's BMI falls below 19, the body senses famine and ovulation is switched off to prevent the risk of having a baby with malnutrition. Excessive exercise can reduce body fat and increase muscle mass to a point where periods cease for the same reason. Risk of miscarriage is also increased in women with a low BMI.

BMI’s greater than 30

This can reduce fertility by 50%. Pregnancy for women with a 30+ BMI is often associated with problems such as maternal diabetes, high blood pressure, big babies and increased risk of caesarean section.
